Do you lose strength in your hands? People with fibromyalgia yes

A common feature that most patients with fibromyalgia is a diffuse pain that affects a large part of the body. This disconcerting symptom often accompanies morning stiffness, paresthesia in the hands and feet, that is to say a sensation of tingling and numbness, sleep disorders and especially a feeling of fatigue and fatigue that accompanies them. All day long.

This fatigue contributes to fibromyalgia have a low stress tolerance affecting up to 90% of patients. This is why a study conducted by a team from the University of Granada and published in January 2011 in the journal Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, analyzed the hand resistance of these patients. To be used as a complementary tool to assess the severity of fibromyalgia in women.

To be used as a complementary tool in Assessing the severity of fibromyalgia in women. The objective was to determine the strength of hand resistance, to discriminate between the presence and absence of fibromyalgia and the severity of fibromyalgia in 81 women with the disease and 44 women in good health. They measured the resistance of the force in the hand with a maximum isometric force test, using a hand dynamometer. The women were classified according to the score obtained in: moderate fibromyalgia (<70) and severe fibromyalgia (70 or more). The results observed were as follows: to discriminate between the presence and absence of fibromyalgia and its severity in 81 women with the disease and 44 healthy women.

The observed results were as follows:

The resistance threshold in the hand that best distinguished between the presence and absence of fibromyalgia was 23.1 kg.

The threshold that best distinguishes between severe and moderate fibromyalgia was 16.9 kg.

A strength of hand force of 23.1 kg or less was associated with a higher 33.8 probability of having fibromyalgia after age delineation.

In the fibromyalgia group, a hand force of 16.9 kg or less was associated with a 5.3-fold higher probability of suffering from severe fibromyalgia.

The findings of these investigators are: resistance to hand strength is reduced in women with fibromyalgia, as well as in those with severe fibromyalgia compared to their partners with moderate fibromyalgia.

They also point out that women who do not meet these proposed standards can guide the physician to make a proper diagnosis, as it would be used as a useful and informative tool. Have you noticed that you have less strength and strength in your hands than your friends / family? In which aspects of daily life do you think a disability? We hope you share your impressions with us, which we will receive from our network members.
