Fibromyalgia is finally recognized as an official diagnosis! Please share this information
On October 1, 2015, fibromyalgia finally had the official code ICD-10-CM officially approved in the United States.
The ICD-10-CM, acronym for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Adjustment, is a list of diagnostic codes for the Medicare and Medicaid service centers and the National Center for Health Statistics. -CM is based on ICD-10, the statistical classification of diseases published by the World Health Organization.
ICD codes are widely used in the health industry, including doctors, insurance companies, and government agencies. They are used to identify diagnosed and classified diseases and conditions.
Before October 1, when diagnosing a patient with fibromyalgia, doctors received the generic code 729.1 – myalgia and myositis, unspecified. Any type of muscle pain or inflammation can be included in the code. But FM is recognized as a separate entity with its own code M79.7 – Fibromyalgia.
Why is it important?
An ICD-10-CM code for fibromyalgia has many potential benefits, but four in particular come to mind.
The fact that fibromyalgia has its own diagnostic code prevents doctors from insisting it’s not real. The World Health Organization and the United States Government have formally reached agreement.
The ICD-10-CM codes are used by insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid. Until now, some insurance companies have declined to cover fibromyalgia treatments, claiming it is not a real disease. They cannot say the same.
Despite the downside of not being determined on the basis of a diagnosis alone, fibromyalgia recognized as a legitimate diagnosis is one of the reasons, it is sometimes used as a basis for refusal, and can lead to a slightly easier disability.
Another diagnostic code will improve the consistency of fibromyalgia research. In her recent article in the National Pain Report, Ginevra Liptaň, MD said, “The new code will also allow for a more in-depth analysis of the treatment of fibromyalgia outcomes. Details from several of these observational studies are collected according to these codes. diagnosis. Without its own diagnostic code, fibromyalgia studies have been hampered by gouache data, including data from patients with true fibro, but from another disease that causes muscle pain. ”
The culmination of a long journey
The road to fibromyalgia legitimacy has been long and difficult. After letting him languish for many years, the U.S. government began to understand that fibromyalgia was real. The FDA led the way when the first drug was approved for the treatment of FM. Subsequently, in 2012, the Social Security Administration made a decision recognizing fibromyalgia as a legitimate obstacle. Today, in 2015, the Medicare and Medicaid service centers and the National Center for Health Statistics officially diagnosed the FM code.
This completes the legitimacy trio and forms a celebration worthy of the name in March!
