10 tips can help people sleep better

  • Enjoy a relaxing (hot) bath at night.
  • Brush your body with a sponge or long-handled brush in the bathroom.
  • Ease painful tender points with a self-massage device (such as a tennis ball).
  • Practice yoga and stretching exercises to relax.
  • Listen to soothing music.
  • Meditate to tame intrusive thoughts and tension.
  • Sleep in a dark room. Try an eye mask if necessary.
  • Keep the room as quiet as possible
  • Make sure that the room temperature is comfortable, pleasant
  • Avoid foods that contain caffeine, such as tea, cola, and chocolate.
  • Therapies to treat insomnia when you have fibromyalgia
  • If you still have trouble sleeping, several therapies can help, including biofeedback, relaxation exercises, stress reduction and cognitive therapy. A psychologist who specializes in sleep disorders can talk about these therapies with you.

Therapies help people manage stress better, which helps control episodes of fibromyalgia, says Cope. “Fibromyalgia comes and goes,” he tells WebMD. “When you’re stressed, it’s when it’s worse.” That’s when you’re most likely to suffer from insomnia, too.

Medications can also help alleviate the pain of fibromyalgia at night, or directly treat insomnia. Medications to relieve fibromyalgia at night are antidepressants, anticonvulsants, analgesics and sleeping pills.

No treatment was administered to a 100% fibromyalgia pain control, adds Cope.

“Medicines help some. Exercise helps some. The reduction of stress helps some. Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps some … If you can get a good night’s sleep, it will work better when you’re awake. “
